Rocío Bueno

Visual artist and photographer. Her work focuses on feminist narratives and collective memory, with projects such as Hilo, Renascence, and Ancestras. With a strong track record of solo exhibitions in Spain and international festivals, as well as group exhibitions, her work has been recognized with international awards and mentions at European festivals. She complements her artistic practice with the publication of photography books.

Renascence

Renascence is a photographic project that pays tribute to the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century poetry, a voice of her generation in the struggle for gender equality, a representative of the New Woman of the 1920s, and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1923. Like many women creators, her legacy fell into obscurity, and this work emerges as an act of recovery to bring her figure into the present.

The project proposes a journey back and forth between past and present, reality and fiction, in which the poet becomes a mirror through which to explore one’s own identity. Through a contemporary lens, a dialogue is established between her poetic work, her photographic archive, and new images generated from them, creating an exercise in resonance that speaks both of Millay and of the modern woman: free, strong, transgressive, but also vulnerable and sensitive.

The narrative unfolds within an imagined space where two intertwined worlds converge. Themes such as childhood, the relationship with the mother, artistic creation, bohemian life, independence, love beyond gender, the body, motherhood, pain, nature, and death shape the narrative.

The project has a polyphonic character and includes the collaboration of eight photographers who contribute self-portraits inspired by various poems by Millay.

In Renascence, the poetic work functions as a silent warp that supports the visual narrative, woven from evocation, fragmentation, and the shared secret between image and word.

The photographs combine contemporary portraits, natural settings, and altered archival images, re-signified through elements inspired by nature and by the symbolism of her red hair, which serves as a visual guide for the project. Renascence is thus an invitation to inhabit fictionalized realities that inspire a path of one’s own.
